Herb Garden Scented Candle

There’s a small ritual to lighting a candle well. Done right, it makes the difference between a short-lived flame and one that burns cleanly and evenly, all the way to the bottom.

First light: On its very first burn, give the candle time. Let the wax melt right to the edges before you blow it out, usually about one to two hours. This sets the “memory” of the wax and prevents tunnelling.

Keep the wick trimmed: Before each burn, trim the wick to about 5mm. A neat wick means a steady flame, less soot, and a slower, more even burn.

Where to place it: Set your candle on a level, heatproof surface, out of draughts and away from anything that might catch. If you’re lighting more than one, leave a little space between them so they burn without affecting each other.

Extinguish with care: When you’re done, snuff, don’t blow. It keeps the scent in the room and stops the wick from smoking. Straighten the wick again while the wax is soft, ready for next time.

A few gentle rules:

• Never leave a burning candle unattended.
• Keep them out of reach of children and pets.
• Stop using once 1cm of wax remains.
