Retail Assistant

Part-time | Berkhamsted | Starting late August 2026

We are looking for friendly, thoughtful sales assistants to join us as we open our new shop.

Cook & Butler is an independent home and lifestyle store celebrating beautiful craftsmanship, antiques, British makers and timeless design. We're looking for people who enjoy creating welcoming spaces, love talking to customers, and appreciate the little details that make shopping a pleasure.

The role includes:

  • Welcoming customers and offering a warm, relaxed shopping experience.
  • Helping customers discover products and sharing the stories behind our makers and collections.
  • Gift wrapping purchases with care and attention.
  • Replenishing stock and keeping the shop looking beautiful throughout the day.
  • Creating seasonal displays and merchandising products.
  • Helping with deliveries, general housekeeping and day-to-day shop tasks.
  • Supporting events, workshops and seasonal launches throughout the year.

We're looking for people with a positive attitude, an eye for detail, and a genuine enthusiasm for homes, interiors, antiques and craftsmanship. Previous retail experience is welcome but not essential -we're far more interested in kindness, reliability and someone who enjoys working as part of a small, close-knit team.

This is a flexible part-time opportunity with weekday and weekend shifts available, starting from late August 2026, ahead of an exciting autumn and Christmas season.

If you enjoy beautiful spaces, thoughtful design and making people feel welcome, we'd love to hear from you. Please send a short introduction, your CV, and any relevant experience to: shop@cookandbutler.co.uk

We are looking for a skilled freelance textile maker to work alongside us creating beautiful, functional pieces for the shop.

The role includes:

  • Making bespoke soft furnishings, including cushions and other home textiles.
  • Repairing and restoring vintage garments with care and sensitivity.

  • Working on one-off commissions and small production runs.

We're looking for someone with excellent sewing skills, confidence using industrial and domestic sewing machines, and an eye for detail. Experience working with vintage fabrics, antiques, or heritage textiles would be a real advantage.

This is a flexible freelance opportunity. We can offer a dedicated workspace at Cook & Butler, or the role can be carried out using a combination of our studio and your own workspace, depending on the project.
